Traveling often leaves me weary, but it also gives me the invaluable opportunity to indulge in reading and contemplation. One vivid memory from years ago stands out: a flight between Rome and Madrid, during which I immersed myself in a compelling article on workplace conflict resolution models. While this scholarly piece was filled with insights, one assertion from the author caught my attention:

"The two conflict resolution models presented here illustrate that conflict most often happens when the emphasis is on differences between people." In their book, "Dealing With People You Can't Stand," Dr. Rick Brinkman and Dr. Rick Kirschner astutely put it as "United we stand, divided we can't stand each other" (38). In essence, when individuals prioritize common ground over differences, relationships tend to flow harmoniously, and conflicts diminish significantly.

This notion has lingered in my thoughts for quite some time, yet I find myself not entirely aligned with the author's perspective. When we delve into the realm of the "workplace," we are delving into an arena where individuals often share a continuous, ongoing connection. Within similar contexts, such as family and romantic relationships, neglecting to invest time and effort in comprehending and addressing differences often leads to the escalation and overwhelming nature of conflicts. Embracing the notion, as proposed by the paper's author, that concentrating on shared attributes while shelving differences paves the way for smooth relationships might, in reality, steer people towards perilous territory. Opting for the easy way out – focusing solely on commonalities and sidelining differences – seldom yields the best outcomes. After all, differences constitute an inherent aspect of our human nature, and while temporarily feigning their absence might create a semblance of psychological safety, it sets the stage for conflicts to spiral in the long run. It's imperative to recognize that differences lie at the core of issues that give rise to conflict. Resolving conflicts appropriately becomes an arduous task unless we address differences in a thorough and timely manner.

The landscape of conflict resolution in the workplace encompasses a myriad of models and approaches, and the efficacy of each hinges on variables such as the work environment (large corporations versus small businesses) and the nature and intensity of the conflict at hand. There's no universally superior or inferior method. However, regardless of the chosen approach, it's paramount to seek avenues for constructively addressing differences (through reconciliation, acceptance, knowledge enhancement, and more). The solution unequivocally does not lie in ignoring these differences but rather in embracing them as an essential facet of the human experience.
